Shipping APIs in the Age of AI Copilots

AI copilots changed how fast I can scaffold an endpoint. They did not change what makes an API survive production. After shipping backends for FinTech, healthcare and retail, the discipline is the same — the typing is just quicker.

Let the copilot draft, not decide

A model is excellent at boilerplate: DTOs, validation schemas, repetitive controller methods. It is unreliable at the decisions that matter — idempotency on writes, pagination strategy, how you version a breaking change. Treat generated code as a first draft you review line by line, not as an authority.

Contracts still come first

I design the contract before I let anything generate code. A clear OpenAPI spec gives the copilot the right context and gives your consumers something to depend on. Prefix routes with a version from day one; retrofitting versioning under live traffic is far more expensive than carrying it from the start.

Security is not autocompleted

Generated code happily trusts its inputs. You cannot. Keep OWASP basics non-negotiable: validate everything at the edge, parameterize queries, scope tokens narrowly, and never log secrets. A copilot will not remind you — your review and your tests will.

Used this way, AI is a force multiplier on the boring 80%, which frees senior judgment for the 20% that actually breaks at 3am.
