The most valuable automation is rarely glamorous. It is the back-office task someone does fifty times a day. With n8n handling the plumbing and one LLM step handling judgment, a lot of that work disappears.
n8n does the boring, reliable part
Triggers, webhooks, retries, talking to APIs — this is what a workflow engine is good at. It is observable and deterministic: you can see exactly which step ran and what it returned. Build the spine of the process here first, before any AI is involved.
Add AI only where judgment is needed
Most steps are rules. A few need interpretation: classifying an incoming request, summarizing a long thread, extracting fields from messy text. Insert a single LLM node there, give it a tight prompt and a structured output format, and let deterministic steps handle everything around it.
Keep a human in the loop where it counts
For anything irreversible — sending money, emailing a client, deleting records — route the AI’s proposal to a person for one click of approval. You get most of the speed with none of the 3am surprises.
This pattern replaced fully manual national-level processes I have worked on, with almost zero infrastructure overhead.
